SHADOW
YOGA
Shadow Yoga is a school of Hatha Yoga based on a practical understanding
of the classical yoga texts. Four preludes are used to prepare
the student for different levels of asana. The preludes combine
the use of warrior forms and sun-forms to release obstructions
in the peripheral body and the spine. Asana practice is introduced
when the work of the preludes is understood.
BALAKRAMA-step
to strength
The first prelude builds strength and stamina. This form makes
the centre of the body firm and removes gross stiffness from the
joints. The student is prepared for the introductory asanas. It
is suitable for students coming from other disciplines of yoga.
CHAYA VIVARANAM-opening
the shadow
The second form develops stability and internal concentration.
Correct positioning through the application of marmasthana (the
vital junctions) awakens the intelligence of the body and frees
one from energetic obstructions created by tension and stress.
The form prepares the student for the practice of the primary
asanas.
CHAYA YODDHA SANCALANAM-moving
the shadow
The third form refines the coordination of movement and breath,
and deepens the work of the warrior and sun forms. the uses of
the bandhas (internal locks) is empasized with along with the
use of marmasthana. Cultivation of this form enables the student
to enter the practice of intermediate asanas with understanding
and confidence.
KARTIKKEYA MANDALAM-circling
the shadow
The fourth form develops the internal energy through deeper stance
work and circular movements. This releases deeply held restrictions
and prepares the individual for advanced asasana practice.
